Image result for Hunchback of Notre Dame South Bay Music TheaterSouth Bay Musical Theatre’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” thunders through melodramatic grand scenes of to-hell-be-damned with hearty active choreography by Elizabeth Cox to moving scenes of sadness and brutality. All emotions are covered in this show.

The musical brings to the stage Victor Hugo’s beloved novel that takes place in 14th century Paris with its Oscar-nominated score from the 1996 Disney animated classic. Innocent Quasimodo is played by Dave Miller, Jay Steele as the evil Archdeacon Frollo, beautifully voiced Jennifer Maggino is absorbed as Esmeralda and Steve Allhoff carries Captain Phoebus with authority add Alea Selburn as the energetic Clopin Trouillefou. Plus a 32 voices choir, uncountable dancers, with rags to riches costumes by Y. Sharon Pong and a grand group of stone statues that only you and Quasimodo can hear and see.

Director Dave Leon tromps through the heavy, dark plot that does not back up and carries through until the heartbreaking end.(I don’t recommend this show for children ten and under)

Music Director Joe Kelly conducts a well balanced 16-plus piece orchestra with lighting by Michael Glenn Munoz and sound by Dan Singletary. Grand Bell sets are delivered by Sonic Designer Stephen C. Wathen staff who created a complete package that gives the reality and feeling of the plot.

With a far-reaching score and compelling story that gives a view of a violent and commanding time.
