The Gilroy Unified School District has made much progress since I joined the board, and it is my goal to keep the pace of these successes going. The graduation rate is up, and the dropout rate is down. The district API score reached over 800, and the new state assessment shows growth over an above-average baseline. Music education is offered at all levels, and there are many Advanced Placement options. We have raised our standards to prepare all students for the option of college. We have received prestigious awards and specialized opportunities are thriving and growing. Thanks to successful programs, school climate continues to improve, leading to dramatic reductions in the district’s suspension and expulsion rates. The district’s financial health is much improved, with a balanced budget and healthy reserve. Our facilities are well maintained and improvements have touched every school.

Important issues face the district. Our educational program has made great progress, but more is needed. Academic rigor and closing the achievement gap continue to be our highest priorities. School funding has improved, but California still ranks low in spending per pupil. If Proposition 55 fails or another recession strikes, budget cuts are likely. We must continue to be financially conservative, while making salary and benefits more competitive. A new school and improvements to existing schools are needed. Thanks to the passage of Measure E, the district has funding, which will go further if Proposition 51 passes.

I am the right person to continue leading the district forward, as part of this successful board with a shared vision. I am an active parent volunteer of two GUSD students, so I understand how issues impact families. I have a degree in software engineering, so I know the importance of academic rigor. I work in real estate development, so I bring expertise to ensure construction projects make sense. I am passionate about education and Gilroy, so I visit our schools frequently to know what is really happening. I work with openness and collegiality with the board and superintendent for the good of all students, and ensure that my priorities are heard.

Please vote for James Pace to #KeepThePace.
