Flash fiction contest underway
Morgan Hill Rotary offering cash prizes for stories of 100 words or less
By Staff Report
Can you tell a story in 100 words? How about six?
Ernest Hemingway famously won a $10 bet with other writers with this story: “For Sale: Baby Shoes, Never Worn.” It is considered a classic in the genre known as “Flash Fiction.”
Children and adults in South Valley are invited to let loose their creative skills by writing a fictional story of 100 words or less for the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill’s Flash Fiction Contest.
The competition is in two age categories, 17 and younger and 18 and older. First place winners receive $250 cash, and runners up will receive gift certificates and other prizes.
The Flash Fiction Contest is co-sponsored by Life Media Group, BookSmart, Morgan Hill Library and Morgan Hill Unified School District. Rotary Club of Morgan Hill is the overall sponsor.
The deadline is Dec. 10 and open to Santa Clara County residents. Winners will be announced in January.
The Morgan Hill Library will host a virtual flash fiction workshop, “Flash Fiction: How to Write the Shortest Stories,” at 11 a.m., Nov. 6 with Jordan Rosenfeld, the author of “How to Write a Page-Turner.”
