At the May 10 meeting the Gavilan College Board of Trustees decided against a provisional appointment to fill the seat left vacant when Jonathon Brusco resigned. Instead, the board announced that there is no need for interested residents in Area 2 to apply at this time.

The vacant seat will be up for election on Nov. 8. Interested candidates should contact the Office of the Registrar for filing information or contact the Gavilan College President’s Office. The individual elected will serve until the end of the term for the seat, which ends in 2024. The Santa Clara County Library District invites patrons of all ages to participate in the free summer reading program, Read Beyond the Beaten Path. This two-month long event, from June 1-July 31, encourages all readers to explore the world through reading and get out into the great outdoors.

Read Beyond the Beaten Path is a great way to keep students engaged during the school break. Research shows it can help prevent “summer slide,” where students lose a significant amount of reading and math knowledge during the summer vacation. The COVID-19 pandemic, which forced school closures and distance learning, compounded the learning loss. The good news is, it can be reversed by reading, enjoying the outdoors, smart play and being imaginative.

It’s easy to get started. Sign up or log into Beanstack and register for summer reading. Patrons can download the Beanstack app on their mobile device. Participants can earn a reward for reading five books and completing one activity this summer. Completion rewards will be available starting Aug. 1.
