For adults, the South Valley is developing a reputation for fine wines in our many friendly family-run wineries.

With the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact starting to soften compared with the past two years, now is the time to consider region-wide activities in local tourism to bring back jobs and revitalize the South Valley’s economy.

Our region has myriad ways to attract people in the surrounding communities during the summer months. This is especially true for families in Silicon Valley, San Benito and Monterey counties who might not be able to afford the high costs of gasoline right now for long road trips and are seeking short-distance day trips in the region.

Among our many attractions is Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park, one of America’s premier amusement parks targeted at younger kids. Located in the scenic Hecker Pass region, the rides, theater shows and other attractions are perfect for a fun-filled day under the sun.

A brand-new venue for families is the Magical Bridge Inclusive Playground located in Morgan Hill’s Community Park. This playground is built for all children, especially those with physical and mental needs that require specially designed play equipment. Morgan Hill’s Aquatics Center also is a major attraction for families who want to spend an afternoon splashing in the water.

For adults, the South Valley is developing a reputation for fine wines in our many friendly family-run wineries. The wine-tasting relaxation can be combined with lunch and/or dinner at many of our fantastic restaurants found in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Our region also has many wonderful music and acting entertainment venues including the South Valley Civic Theatre shows, Pintello Comedy Theater, Limelight Theater and the immensely popular Friday Night Music Series at the Morgan Hill Downtown Amphitheater.

According to Visit California’s April-released report prepared by Dean Runyan Associates detailing the economic impact of state tourism in 2021, Santa Clara County’s visitor-generated spending, tax revenue and jobs increased from 2020 to 2021. However, spending remained at 53.5 percent of 2019 levels. The 2021 economic impact figures reinforce the opportunity for the South Valley to close the recovery gap and drive our local economy forward through new visitor market spending.

Development of tourism in the South Valley region not only benefits economic recovery but also enhances our sense of community and pride. Let’s promote the region to our friends and family who might live in the Bay Area and want a fun place to travel this summer.
