Carol Marques
Gilroy City Council Candidate Carol Marques
I am running for my city council seat in November because Gilroy has many issues to address in the next four years. We need rational decision-makers on the Council. I am open-minded and make decisions based on facts not emotion. Before any vote, I always consider what is best for the citizens of Gilroy.
My priorities for the next four years include curbing overdevelopment that causes a loss of prime agricultural land and open spaces and maintaining sufficient staffing and competitive salaries for the Gilroy Police and Fire Departments. Building a fourth fire station (and eventually a fifth ) to improve response times is also critical.
Affordable housing is a priority. I also want to address the plight of the unhoused in our community by addressing the root causes-drug addiction, alcoholism and mental illness. I will support new drug rehabilitation, mental health facilities and job counseling, training and placement programs. We cannot tolerate public encampments where drugs are used or our residents endangered.
I will lobby our city government to engage with the state to repeal laws that reduce penalties for theft and shoplifting and release criminals into our community.
I know the importance of economic development. By revitalizing the Downtown and making Gilroy a tourist and recreational destination, we can bring in better jobs with higher salaries for our working families.
Citizens have told me their biggest fear is Gilroy becoming what they moved away from in the Bay Area–crowded conditions and crime. We need a Council who is going to take into account all of the people’s concerns without losing sight of what attracted people to move here. I am the person who will do that.
