A Future for Gilroy, Together

As people face enormous financial pressure from the high cost of housing, groceries, fuel, and owning and maintaining vehicles, and as the ravages of unchecked climate change are both visible to the eye and producing startling headlines, business-as-usual and resistance to change take on a sinister quality. Under these conditions, as shadows spread, it’s difficult for the young, for families, and for working people to imagine a promising future. It is under these conditions that I seek to break with the past and propose a way forward that will serve everyone. A future for Gilroy acknowledges climate change realities, builds for all Gilroyans, and fosters culture and quality of life.

Here’s a way forward: We build for density downtown, providing truly affordable, climate-efficient homes to a population of young adults, young professionals, young families, and longtime Gilroyans. We offer safe, walkable streets, with places to relax and interact downtown, a sparkling new community center, easy access to Caltrain, buses, charging stations, quality bike infrastructure, and the soon-to-be high speed rail to LA and San Francisco. Foot traffic and civic life bring new business, services, and restaurants downtown, and diverse, dynamic young Gilroyans create a Gilroy-specific culture and nightlife. Older Gilroyans feel safe in a populated, amenity-rich downtown that isn’t car-centric and dangerous. Tourists come for the startling natural beauty on the periphery, farm-fresh produce, a tour through the vineyards on an electric tram, the Sharks 3-sheet ice rink, the planned Adventure Park with mountain bike trails, a gondola, a wave pool, and a surfing pool, the majestic redwoods of Mount Madonna, the ever-charming Gilroy Gardens, and for things unforeseen that a promising future will occasion.
