Rebecca Armendariz – Candidate statement 2024
1. Your motivation for running for public office
Being on Council is quite challenging, especially given the Council make up and stark differences in our respective values and priorities, but, I find it rewarding, nonetheless, because I am able to speak for the interests of members of our community who are not represented by other council members, for folks from the most marginalized sectors of our community. Gilroy has such potential to develop into a safer, fun and inclusive home for everyone who chooses to live here. That potential is what motivates me.
2. Your qualifications and experience that make you a strong candidate
As a fourth generation Gilroyan, a mother and a committed community member, I have dedicated my life to helping others. I have had the privilege of serving on the CIty Citizens Advisory Committee that administers the CDBG grants to our nonprofit service providers, the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Housing Advisory Committee and the Planning Commission. I learned a tremendous amount from these positions, in addition to my personal and professional experience with government and politics, which gives me insight and perspective on issues from a regional level, which is key to addressing many of the issues our City faces.
3. Your vision for GIlroy and the key issues you plan to address if elected
When I picture my community in 10 years, it includes a thriving downtown that is walkable and bike friendly, mixed level housing developments with beautiful and healthy tree canopies, and nearby accessible parks and recreational facilities, in every part of our city. Fair Housing and the equitable distribution of funding and resources are two priority areas that I will continue to address.
4. What sets you apart from other candidates and why voters should choose you
Everyday, I get to work with young people, help the unhoused and support community organizing and policy that improves the lives of the working families that make SIlicon Valley run. I am deeply committed to helping others and making my community a better place to live.
